All of us at the Mission Society are truly saddened to hear of the passing of pioneering actress, activist, and humanitarian, Cicely Tyson. With an esteemed, award-winning career spanning over seven decades, Ms. Tyson was a much revered national treasure and creative force. We are unendingly grateful for her groundbreaking contributions to the stage, screen, and beyond.
Ms. Tyson's incredible legacy includes paving the way for a new portrayal of Black women in media, refusing to take on roles that perpetuated stereotypes, advocating for a better world on and off the screen, and serving as the guiding force of the Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts to usher in new generations of performers.
She was also a dedicated supporter of the Mission Society, serving twice as the honorary chair of our gala and uplifting the voices of our students and families as an honoree at our bicentennial celebration. She will always be an incredibly valued member of our community, and will be deeply missed. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and colleagues.
